As we stand at the beginning of the 21st century, the role of development policy has changed. Today, development cooperation is seen as global structural and peace policy. It aims to help resolve crises and conflicts in a peaceful manner. It aims to help ensure that scarce resources are more equitably shared and that our environment is preserved for coming generations. And it aims to help reduce global poverty.

In order to achieve these goals, development policy must target different levels. And of course, the sight of the fact that foreign policy, trade policy, security policy and development policy are today very closely linked cannot be lost. This makes the mandate of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) wide and varied.

German-Brazilian Development Cooperation

In 1962, the German-Brazilian Development Cooperation began. Today, Brazil – an anchor country and emerging economy – is Germany's most important political and economic partner in Latin America and recognized player in the international arena. In environmental and resource conservation in particular, the country plays a key role, as it does for the economic and political development of the region as a whole.

The characteristics of Brazil as middle income country have led to a cooperation portfolio which is innovative in its implementation of the BMZ's Anchor-Country Strategy.

The German Development Cooperation supports Brazil in the following priority areas:

• Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency
• Protection and Sustainable Management of Tropical Forests
• Trilateral Cooperation
