The institute was established in November 2002, in order to strengthen the public health protection of consumers. It is the scientific agency of the Federal German Republic, which is responsible for opinions and statements prepared on issues of food and feed safety and the safety of substances and products. Through these tasks the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment will perform an important role in improving consumer protection and food safety.
The BfR is a part of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV). In its scientific evaluation and research, it is independent.
